Advanced Laboratory Testing in Geotechnical Engineering: From Concepts to Methods

Hamed Sadeghi

Advanced Laboratory Testing in Geotechnical Engineering: From Concepts to Methods provides a comprehensive exploration of advanced laboratory techniques essential for understanding soil behavior and properties. The book begins by establishing the scope, significance, and practical applications of laboratory testing in geotechnical engineering. It outlines the general requirements for conducting accurate and reliable soil tests, emphasizing the importance of standardized practices. Chapters focus on various aspects of laboratory testing, starting with soil sampling and preservation procedures to maintain sample integrity. The process of soil sampling and sample preparation in the laboratory is detailed to ensure proper handling and preparation techniques. The book covers a range of soil mechanics tests, including conventional tests, dynamic and cyclic tests, and specialized tests for unsaturated soils to study their unique behavior. Flow characteristics and retention capacity of soils are analyzed to understand their response under different moisture conditions. Physical modeling tests provide insights into soil behavior under simulated conditions, while microstructural characterization techniques offer a detailed examination of soil structure. By offering a comprehensive overview of advanced laboratory testing methods in geotechnical engineering, this book serves as a valuable resource for researchers, engineers, and practitioners seeking to enhance their understanding of soil mechanics and geotechnical behavior.

Over the past three decades, Hamed has been the recipient of numerous scientific and cultural awards, including the KANS honorary diploma, the "Dr. Kazemi-Ashtiani" prize recognizing him as a nationally distinguished young research assistant professor, as well as being named Sharif University's distinguished student. He has also been awarded the best PhD thesis in civil and environmental engineering. Hamed's research record includes over 80 published articles. He has served as the Chair of the Iran InterPore Chapter and the Chair of TC-106 Unsaturated Soils, of the Iranian Geotechnical Society. He takes great pride in having recruited and supervised over 50 elite students as research or teaching assistants. His research team is at the forefront of advancing knowledge about the complex interplay between soil, solutes, the atmosphere, plants, and bacteria, conducting rigorous characterization, theoretical modeling, and numerical simulation in a multidisciplinary context.

Molaabasi, Hossein: - Hossein MolaAbasi received his MSc and PhD in Geotechnical Engineering from the University of Guilan and Babol University of Technology, Iran, in 2010 and 2016 respectively, and he works as an Assistant Professor at Gonbad University. He is currently working on the soil improvement, particularly zeolite or/ and cement improved soils, the basis of which is laboratory-based and has a noticeable number of students in this field. He has published numerous articles which subjects revolve around the experimental tests that can be found in Google Scholar. Furthermore, he seeks to develop a relationship based on neural networks in his articles.
