The awakening process has received limited discussion in comparison with other phases of the circadian cycle. Along with other points, this study makes clear that, though body-based, "awakening" is often applied to enhancements of consciousness, whether within an individual or across a culture. Also taken up are the persistent allusions to movements downward in depictions of awakenings. Despite the familiar phrase, "wake up," intimations of downwardness or falling typically appear in tandem with retrieval of a depicted subject's identity following a sleep episode. On the verbal side, Awakenings in Word and Image considers selections from Plato, the New Testament, Proust, and other sources. Visual art discussed includes work by Italian frescoist Taddeo Zuccari and acclaimed New York painter Vincent Desiderio .
