
Prof. Açikgözoglu serves as an academic at Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University, Faculty of Fine Arts, Department of Traditional Turkish Arts. His instructional repertoire includes courses on book arts, inscriptions, and Ottoman architecture. Notably, he conducted a year-long research project on the Art of Bookbinding of Turkish Manuscripts at the British Library between 2022 and 2023. During his tenure in London, he delivered two short courses on Ebru Art and Akkase Ebru Art at the Prince's School of Traditional Arts and conducted regular courses at the Yunus Emre Institute.
He earned his PhD from Marmara University's Turkic Studies Institute Turkish Art program in 2002, specializing in "Mihrab Front Space in the Ottoman Mosque." He held positions at Sakarya University Faculty of Fine Arts from 2003 to 2009 and at Marmara University Faculty of Arts and Sciences Department of Art History from 2009 to 2014. Under the tutelage of esteemed calligraphy masters Hüseyin Kutlu, Prof. Dr. Ali Alparslan, and Dr. Ali Riza Özcan, he honed his calligraphy skills. Additionally, in 2005, he was granted the prestigious icazet (degree) for Ebru art by master Sadrettin Ozcimi. A prolific exhibitor, Prof. Açikgözoglu has participated in numerous group exhibitions both domestically and internationally. He has also showcased his personal exhibitions titled 'Classical Turkish Ebru Art' in prominent cities such as Istanbul, London, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Pristina, Sarajevo, and Budapest. Since 2008, Dr. Açikgözoglu has overseen the SunbulEfendiEbrihanesi in Istanbul, a Traditional Ebru Training Institute, where he trains student development through the master-apprentice relationship in Traditional Turkish Ebru Art. Beyond his academic and artistic endeavors, Dr. Açikgözoglu serves as a Trustee of the Yunus Emre Foundation and contributes to the Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency's efforts in the restoration of historical monuments abroad.
