About the Author

Dr. Yu, Hesheng is a distinguished academic and researcher currently serving as a Professor at the School of Chemical Engineering and Technology. His extensive educational background and professional experience reflect his expertise in various fields, particularly in environmental management and advanced engineering technologies.

Professor Yu obtained his Doctorate in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Waterloo in Canada, where he studied from January 2009 to June 2013. Prior to his doctoral studies, he earned both his Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Mineral Processing Engineering from the China University of Mining and Technology. He completed his undergraduate studies in July 2005 and his Master's in June 2008, building a strong foundation in engineering principles and mineral processing techniques.

Following his doctoral studies, Professor Yu embarked on a career in research and academia. From October 2014 to August 2017, he worked as a Senior Researcher at Lakes Environmental, where he was also an NSERC Industrial Research and Development Fellow (IRDF). During this time, he focused on cutting-edge research and development in environmental technologies, particularly in the areas of air pollution control and visible-light responsive photocatalysis.

In August 2017, Professor Yu transitioned to his current role as a Professor at the School of Chemical Engineering and Technology. His research primarily focuses on visible-light responsive photocatalysis, the application of artificial intelligence in engineering, and air pollution control. His work has contributed significantly to advancements in these fields, combining theoretical research with practical applications to address some of the most pressing environmental challenges.

Beyond his academic and research responsibilities, Professor Yu is actively involved in several professional and social affiliations. Since October 2021, he has served as a Think Tank Expert on Environmental Management of Chemicals and Waste for the Basel Convention Regional Centre (BCRC) Asia-Pacific. He has also held notable roles as Session Chair at the 35th Annual International Pittsburgh Coal Conference in 2018 and for Coal Processing at the 2017 International Conference on Coal Science & Technology and the 2017 Australia-China Symposium on Energy. These roles underscore his leadership and influence in the field of environmental engineering.

Professor Yu's contributions to the academic community extend to his role as a reviewer for several prestigious international journals, including the AIChE Journal, Chemical Engineering Journal, Energy, Energy & Fuels, Aerosol and Air Quality Research, Fuel Processing Technology, and the Journal of the Air & Waste Management Association. His commitment to excellence in research has been recognized with accolades such as the Outstanding Reviewer for the journal Energy in 2016.

Through his extensive research, teaching, and professional service, Professor Hesheng Yu has established himself as a leading figure in chemical engineering and environmental management, making significant contributions to both academic scholarship and practical applications in his field.

Dr. TAN, Zhongchao is a Chair Professor and Vice Provost at Eastern Institute of Technology, Ningbo. He was a faculty member at the University of Waterloo from 2010 to 2023, and the University of Calgary from 2004 to 2010. He received his BSc and MSc degrees from Tsinghua University, Beijing in the 1990s, and PhD degree from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, USA in 2004. He was the founding Executive Director of Tsinghua-Waterloo Joint Research Centre for Energy and Environmental Technologies (2017-2021).

Tan's contribution to scholarship has been recognized by international peers, with more than 135 papers published in international journals. His single-authored textbook, Air Pollution and Greenhouse Gases (released by Springer Singapore in 2014), has been downloaded 1.7 million times globally, and another coauthored textbook, Mass and Energy Balances, was recognized as "the top-used publications on SpringerLink that concern one or more of the UN Sustainable Development Goals". His impact on his peer groups and the wider society is also evidenced by numerous domestic and international awards, including Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Engineering, Fellow of the Canadian Society for Mechanical Engineering, University of Waterloo Outstanding Performance Award, Schulick School of Engineering Early Research Excellence Award, and Distinguished Visiting Professorship at Tsinghua University.
