Gods, Heroes, and Us: Greek Myths in the Modern Era

James Sale

Gods, Heroes, and Us is a call to rediscover the wisdom of the Greeks and to heed their warnings against hubris, disorder, and the abandonment of moral

law. Sale argues that myths are not relics of a bygone age but living narratives that speak directly to our deepest needs and challenges. By revisiting these stories, we can reclaim a sense of purpose, balance, and harmony.

In its synthesis of ancient wisdom and modern insight, Gods, Heroes, and Us is a powerful reminder that the myths we tell shape the lives we lead. Sale's work is both a celebration of Greek mythology and a timely meditation on the enduring truths that can guide us toward a more meaningful existence.

Praise for this book

Readers are in for an enlightening and introspective quest with James Sale's newest book, "Gods, Heroes and Us." In analyzing twelve Greek myths, Sale invites readers to explore their own personal odysseys involving the invisible world within themselves: the importance of order and humility; the significance of understanding reality through story, and the consequence of failing to seize the moment and act amongst today's forces of chaos and confusion. Sale thoughtfully elucidates on why there is hope and substance to be found in the wisdom of Greek mythology in today's world of smartphones, artificial intelligence and social media.

Feature Writer for New York's The Epoch Times, Dean George.

In "Gods, Heroes, and Us" James Sale challenges the common view that the old myths are just good fictional yarns. He shows us how figures like Athena, Odysseus, and Narcissus are indispensable for understanding ourselves, revealing enduring truths about justice, human limitations, and social order. In navigating the path through today's cultural complexities, we could all use a dose of Sale's wisdom-the same wisdom that has guided prior civilizations for millennia-to help us to avoid the hubris of scientism, postmodernism, and other ideological diseases plaguing our world. This book should be essential reading for all thought leaders, students, and educators, as well as anyone interested in Greek mythology and its modern relevance.

Andrew Benson Brown, writer and critic for the Epoch Times in New York.

The ancient Greek myths hold an enduring and inescapable power over culture, returning generation after generation to light the imaginations of not only youth, but of all humankind. In Gods, Heroes, and Us, James Sale pierces the darkness of time and culture to reveal the inner workings of the Greek myths and their extraordinary significance. In Gods, Heroes, and Us, James Sale taps into the wellspring of creative energy that has powered the greatest poets and writers of Western civilization for thousands of years - Greek mythology.

Evan Mantyk, Editor & President, the Society of Classical Poets.

Some of us were privileged to be enthralled by ancient Greek heroes and gods while growing up. Others received only a smattering of lore through Hollywood renditions of Troy and Percy Jackson. James Sales brings the most notable figures to life with the grandeur and cautionary tales their stories offer. This is not a children's book but rather a volume aimed at adults, sifting through the philosophical implications and present-day applications of these archetypal narratives. Sale expertly weaves mythology, philosophy, and modern-era history in a way that is both insightful and engaging. Simply put, time spent with Ancient Greek Heroes and Gods is enjoyable and beneficial long after it has been read and reread.

Professor JD Wallace.

It is often said that the Greek myths are still pertinent today because they have purpose and impart knowledge, they are timeless stories that are a source of creative inspiration. They were written however to make us think, to use reason and question our beliefs on how the world works. Like the ancient Greek philosophers James Sale has written a book which provokes, that grapples with complex concepts and challenges the reader to explore those concepts and taking, inspiration from the gods, find a pathway out of chaos.
