He Huli ʻUlaʻula: A Study in Scarlet

Leilehua Yuen

Set in Hawaiʻi of the Monarchy era, this Holmesian pastiche follows the adventures of Kamaka Holmes, distant cousin to the famed detective. Her cousin, Fevronia Watkins, takes the role of Dr. John Watson. I shall let her open the story in her own voice:

I was born in 1872, in Worcester, Massachusetts in the fair hills and glens of New England. Our farm was somewhat secluded from the town, and my mother wished me to remain by her side, so I did not attend school. Rather, I was educated at home, My reading was varied, and ranged from the Bible to Alexander Pope. My parents were strongly liberal in their ideas, and supported emancipation and suffrage for all.

My Father, Jonathan Bearnard Watkins, had been born in Worcester some thirty years before my own arrival, and it was his family's farm to which he had brought his bride, my mother. Born Cairistiòna Muire Holmes, she traveled across the Atlantic Ocean with him to embark on this new life. They had met while he was on holiday in Scotland, and his parents are said to have been much surprised at her arrival. They were able to enjoy a long honeymoon, as my own arrival was some years later.

In the year 1884, both of my parents died of consumption. Those few relatives I had in New England were burdened with troubles of their own, and had no wherewithal to spend on an orphan such as myself, nor did they wish to be in contact with one who had had close association with such a dread disease.

It was determined that my little inheritance should be used to book passage for me to the Hawaiian Islands where my Mother's Brother should assume my maintenance. This was deemed especially appropriate as his wife had died two years before, and he had a girl near in age to myself. It was thought that we two girls should be companions and comfort each other in our mutual maternal losses.

This girl, Lydia Kamakaʻimiʻike Kāwau Holmes, my own cousin, became my dearest friend. Herein I offer my chronicles of her life and adventures.

About the Author

Yuen, Leilehua: - A trained storyteller, educator, artist, and writer, Leilehua Yuen brings these skills and her love of her islands' history together in her pastiche series based on the Shelock Holmes canon. As a young girl, the daughter of working artists and storytellers, Yuen went back and forth between Hawai'i and California, as she had extended family in both places. She got used to traveling, performing, being around people who did things. When she was young, her parents went their separate ways and she remained in Hawai'i, where her father's parents helped raise her in the town of Hilo. Her tūtū-kane, her grandfather, was a physician and supported her interest in science. Many of the Kamaka Holmes scenes in which the teen sets up her laboratory and experiments are based on Yuen's own youthful activities.

Praise for this book

As a Sherlockian, the father of five daughters, and a resident of Hawai'i, I am delighted that you, dear reader, have chosen to discover this unique version of A Study in Scarlet (He Huli ʻUlaʻula). It is always a treat to read The Canon (the original 4 novels and 56 short stories about Sherlock Holmes) and the many pastiches it has inspired. But it is a further joy when young ladies are strong and clever as they come of age in such a story set in the late 19th century. The fact that all this is happening in Hawaiʻi is a cultural cherry on this special Sherlockian sundae.

Part I sets the stage for the reader and explains how the young Fevronia H. Watkins was transplanted from New England to Hawaii. It also provides the first hints that Sherlock Holmes has been a heavy influence on Kamaka, Fevronia's Hawaiian cousin, and why she wants to become Hawaiʻi's first consulting detective.

Part II is when the story really starts to soar and proves, once again, that the game is afoot. And what a game it is as the two young cousins try to solve an unsolvable murder mystery full of red herrings, twists, and more than a little bumbling on the part of the local authorities.

In the spirit of The Grand Game played by Sherlockians around the globe, I feel a special obligation to recognize the "literary agent" involved with this effort. Her name is D. Leilehua Yuen and she is a fellow member of The Shaka Sherlockians of Hawai'i. Leilehua is a noted Hawaiian historian, educator, artist, and author. This is her first work of fiction-excuse me, her first foray into The Grand Game. As the literary agent Sir Arthur Conan Doyle brought to life the words of Dr. John Watson, so Leilehua Yuen brings to life the words of Miss Fevronia Watkins, chronicler of Miss Lydia Kamakaʻimiʻike Kāwau Holmes.

He Huli ʻUlaʻula (A Study in Scarlet) is a timeless adventure which will be embraced by both young adults and adults. The theme of friendship between cousins Fevronia and Kamaka shines through in much the same way it dominates and threads all the stories of The Canon. Readers will learn more about life in late 19th century Monarchial Hawaiʻi, while reinforcing their love of Sherlock Holmes and Dr. John H. Watson.

Yes, the game is indeed afoot...but this time in Hawaiʻi!
