Love and friendship

Anoh N'Ta

Several motivations prompted the development of this work. These include the desire to take into account several traditions of research on sexuality, and to grasp the limits of the licit in the emotional and sexual behavior and desires of young people in the Western Middle Ages between the 11th and 15th centuries. The study of how these behaviors were perceived and regulated helps to highlight the sometimes complex distinctions between the licit and the illicit. As a result, it emerges from the analyses carried out that general considerations on sexual activity conceived above all as a sin coming from outside, from the devil in particular, lead to virginity, chastity and continence being held as the norm, especially among religious. Sexual relations among the laity were only tolerated between people of the same sex and within marriage. Concubinage, abduction, fornication, prostitution and rape are illicit. In same-sex relationships, affective behaviors of the friendship ideal were favored. Sodomy, seen as the ultimate in sexual pleasure, was unnatural.
