Doors Open Ontario is a provincewide heritage tourism program that gives the public free access to explore fascinating heritage properties across Ontario. It showcases the buildings, natural spaces, infrastructure and cultural landscapes that shape and define our communities. Doors Open Ontario began in 2002 to connect people to places by facilitating public access to built and natural heritage sites that normally restrict regular access to the public.

We visited the East Flamborough Township Hall which is unaltered from the day it was constructed in 1856-1857. It is built of locally quarried limestone. Brothers Andrew, Nathan and Nick Brown bought the building in November 2016 and restored it to be the home of Brown Lawyers and Brown Financial Security.

Birmingham House is a former Georgian
Methodist Church built of stone. The interior has been completely redone and other than a couple of wooden pews no longer resembles a church. The building is currently home to the CBY Academy of Performing Arts and Birmingham Consulting.

The Huxley Building is a prominent property in the Waterdown Heritage Conservation District. Built in 1860, it is now the popular used bookstore, Pickwick Books.

Mill Street and 5 American House is one of the longest running hotels in Ontario, celebrating 200 years this year. Under the present owner, Mr. Frank Zizzo, the interior of the hotel has been altered, both to modernize and serve the demands of the public. The original wooden floors, tin ceiling in the front section and the last old-time stand-up bar in Ontario have been removed.

Knox Presbyterian Church is a stone church that was built in 1853 with additions in 1901 and 1996.

Grace Anglican Church, built in 1860, is located in a park-like setting and is in the Gothic Revival architectural style. The cemetery is beside the church.

St. James United Church was built in the 1950s, in a Gothic Revival style. Currently under redevelopment, the church will expand to include forty-four new rental homes surrounding the retained place of worship.
