The Bumps On My Socks and Other Things That Bother My Brain

Russell

The Bumps On My Socks and Other Things That Bother My Brain is a rhyming children's book that presents some of the challenges faced by children with sensory processing disorder (SPD). Clothing tags and textures, bright lights, loud noises and night terrors are some sensory issues that are included. Children diagnosed with brain disorders such as autism, ADHD, OCD and anxiety are more likely to experience sensory issues. The goals of this book are to help children with SPD learn some effective coping skills, and to help those who care for them have a better understanding of these challenges. Different children experience different issues. Hopefully the child reading this book, or being read to, can identify with some of the situations that are addressed here, and find helpful solutions that can work for them.

Praise for this book

"What an absolutely delightful and educational book for both children and adults. Being aware and understanding SPD is the first step to coping with it. I read this as library volunteer to children and many parents wanted to know how they could get a copy."

"I purchased this book after it was recommended to me by a fellow mom whose child has sensory processing disorder and autism. My son loves this book! We can both relate to the challenges the children and parents face in the book."

"I loved the pages in the back where we can write our own experiences and where my son can tell me about things helpful to him when he becomes overwhelmed. It is an easy read for any child!"

"This book is beautifully written and illustrated. If you know someone with sensory issues, the rhyming story and pictures are so relatable. The pages at the end of the book help open dialogue. As a former Special Educator, I know this book will be helpful for many."

"Fantastic book. Entertaining easy read for kids. Provides insight into Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD) and offers strategies for parents to understand and help their child manage SPD"

"This book not only helps young ones understand their sensory aversions but subtly teaches adults how to handle them as well. It puts forth a simple understanding of what is happening to the child and ways to cope."

"There is a worksheet in the back that you and your child can work on to figure out what bothers your child and what can help them get through it. Remember that the world isn't built for them, but there are resources out there to help them thrive. Sometimes it's as simple as headphones."

"This book is great for any kid with Sensory Processing issues or their friends or family to help them understand. I could see relief on my SPD kiddos face when he realized hey mom understands some of my issues. SO great for kids to be able to relate to characters in a book."
