"The Confession" is historical fiction set in 19th century America. Two young people meet on the Oregon Trail. Their lives devolve, leaving bereft a son and daughter. The children become separated and grow up in different worlds, after the girl is adopted from an orphanage run by intrepid pioneer nuns.
As with Whitfield's other books, "The Confession" started with the kernel of an idea and grew. She doesn't map out a story line, just listens to what the characters say and writes the scene.
"Apsara," Whitfield's second book was awarded a Kirkus Star early in 2023, then Kirkus Reviews chose it as one of their 100 Best Indie Books of 2023.
