Like Martin Luther and his 95 thesis, Strange Worship was written to highlight the errant ways of today's church. Many of the offenses in today's Christianity are quite different from the purgatory and indulgences of Martin Luther's time. Today, followers of Jesus Christ find themselves in places of worship that have theatrical lighting, special effect fog and darkened worship spaces. Simply put, cannot call these spaces sanctuaries, and we cannot call their stages altars, and their pulpits have become motivational speaker podiums. In a nutshell, worshippers assemble in a building that resembles an entertainment venue rather than a holy place of worship. Sermons have transitioned to motivational speeches and are formulated to make parishioners feel good; in turn they pay for services rendered in the form of tithes and offering.
Today's "Praise and worship" has become the ultimate setting for the best professional singers and musicians to show off their talents disguised as worship leaders singing feel good praises to God. All the while sporting tattoos, bamboo earrings, tight fitting apparel, sneakers, T-Shirts, leather outfits, elaborate jewelry and everything you would find in a rock and roll or hip-hop concert.
Pastors have become "hype men" for politicians and churches have become political partners with their political party of choice. Politicians are invited to come into the place of worship and present speeches that are composed of a mixed wine of religion, politics, economic, military and domestic ideas which have nothing to do with the Gospel of Jesus Christ. All the while each Pastor ignoring the fact that followers of Christ who vote against each other's party cannot possibly be walking in agreement and sharing brotherly love in unity.
Thrown in with all of these worldly characteristics, we find deeply nestled within the walls of today's worship centers the practice of homosexual and promiscuous behavior. From fornication to adultery to same sex encounters, it is being practiced in the church from the ministry to the pews and in the back offices of the so called "house of God". How did we get here?
And still till this day, we are still grappling with the "believers" who think it is perfectly fine to practice subtle and blatant racism within the congregation of the Lord. This behavior has been deeply rooted in the Church since the days of slavery and exploitation of innocent men and women, and it appears that it continues to grow stronger with the current choice for a leader of the next administration.
There are many more deviations highlighted in this book, and it is a must read for the children of God who sense there is something fundamentally wrong within Christianity. That understand their feeling of discomfort as believers are not misplaced and that their discernment is spot on. That as genuine followers of Jesus Christ they are not being judgmental and uncooperative but instead genuinely care for their follow believers and want to see a return to true worship and holy behavior.
We must do all we can to restore the faith that was once delivered to the saints.
