The Looming shadows of an African Child: In the Eyes of Jacob

Jacob Ndagwa Musikhe

This is the story of Jacob Musikhe as he saw and lived it. Many people do not know or will never meet Jacob. That is the essence of this book. To truly understand a community, one must know the stories of ordinary individuals, not just the exceptional ones. Most of the stories that come out of Africa focus on the exceptionally gifted or the most impoverished. However, the reality is that most of Africa, including Kenya, is not like that. The African story is about ordinary people living extraordinary lives in a variety of different settings and experiencing their lives from multiple perspectives at the same time. In this book, Jacob explains his life, including the people he encountered and the way he saw it. Everyone sees each interaction differently, and everyone is entitled to the meaning they make. Everyone is welcome to their own interpretation for there is no absolute truth in our interactions. He began the story in the beginning!
"I was born in the Abakhokhobi clan. It is a fairly small clan with its members scattered and strewn across the two countries of the present day, Kenya and Uganda. We belong to the greater Western Bantu-speaking peoples of East Africa. Around 1700 AD, following the initial Bantu migration from Congo and Cameroon, my ancestors, led by my seventh great-grandfather Nabuyi, are said to have settled in Ibanda. They came through Buganda and settled first in present-day Busoga before proceeding to the forested lands of Ibanda, Eastern Uganda, only separated from Kenya by a water mass, the Gulf of Sio Port."
