In African societies, proverbs are used for many reasons. Originally they were used to preserve elements of knowledge and wisdom. They were also used, as they are today, as figure of speech, to remind the speaker or his audience of an idea, or to deliberately communicate such idea to his listener in a subtle way where it is important or expedient to do so. This may be to inform, educate, admonish, castigate, encourage, inspire or combat the hearer of the proverb. The work is a compendium of two hundred and fifty adages of the Yoruba people. It is recommended for constant usage by all speakers to display the beauty of the Yoruba language.
