Somehow I missed reading this debut crime novel (which won the Edgar Award) when it was published in 2020 and I think it would have made my best-of-year list then. Anyway yes it is that good.

This genuinely thrilling and atmospheric novel brims with characters who are easy to root for. The pacing isn’t perfect ... but when Cork, Henry and the others faced mortal danger, my heart leaped into my throat. For those new to the series, “Fox Creek” is a strong entry point.

@rachsyme it looks like L.M. Montgomery's THE BLUE CASTLE isn't in print anymore?? (there are bootleg copies, which do not count) anyway still my favorite of her books

The novel may be predictable, but it still manages to be an intoxicating thrill ride. Hillier jams her foot on the accelerator and never lets up.

We did not have nearly enough of Rebecca Godfrey's writing in the world, but what she produced -- a marvelous novel, THE TORN SKIRT, and a groundbreaking work of true crime, UNDER THE BRIDGE -- was masterful and will live on.
