7 Keys to Research for Writing Success: An Acclaimed Author and a Literacy Specialist Unlock the Secrets to Getting Ready to Write

David L. Harrison

Before actual writing occurs, writers prepare. With these words, award-winning children's author David Harrison affirms the importance of teaching students the necessary steps of prewriting-from choosing a viable topic to conducting in-depth research to taking effective notes and organizing them. In this book David offers insights into his prewriting process, while educator Mary Jo Fresch translates his methods into engaging lessons that develop students' research skills to enhance their writing.

Praise for this book

"This is the very book teachers have been yearning for--and not just ELA teachers--ALL teachers. In user-friendly terms and filled with practical, immediately useful ideas, David and Mary Jo walk readers through the treacherous waters of helping students find research topics, gather the right information, and get ready to write about them with clarity. If you've been wondering about how to navigate research writing with students of all ages, read this book."
-- Ruth Culham, Ed.D., author of Traits Writing: The Complete Writing Program for Grades K-8
"This is not just 'another' book on writing! David Harrison and Mary Jo Fresch have teamed up to provide readers a 'fresh' perspective on perhaps the hardest part of writing--getting started. First, author and poet David talks about various prewriting issues and how he handles them in his own writing. Literacy scholar Mary Jo follows with actual classroom lessons for helping students explore these issues in their own writing. This immensely readable and practical volume will definitely help many students who would otherwise struggle just to get started in their writing."
-- Timothy Rasinski, Ph.D., Professor, Reading and Writing Center, Kent State University, and author of The Fluent Reader
