A Look Back in Time: Memoir of a Military Kid in the 50s, Vol. II

Bernard N. Lee

A young boy. A military family. A world far from home.

Step into the shoes of Bernard N. Lee, Jr., a wide-eyed military kid in the 1950s, as he embarks on a journey that will shape the rest of his life-his family's first overseas tour in post-war Germany. In this second volume of A Look Back in Time, Vol. II 2nd Ed., Lee invites readers to relive his experiences growing up in a country still healing from the scars of war, while he navigates the challenges and joys of adolescence.

Can you remember what it felt like to walk along railroad tracks as a kid, dreaming of far-off places and new adventures? For Bernard, those tracks led across the Atlantic to Ansbach, Germany-and to unforgettable moments that would stay with him forever.

Of all his father's Army assignments-from the hills of Georgia to the plains of Oklahoma-none compared to the family's time stationed in Europe. In these pages, Bernard reflects on that pivotal chapter with warmth, honesty, and humor.

Join Bernard on a journey full of adventure, mishaps, and growing pains, including:

  • Laugh-out-loud lessons-like the unexpected hangover from a shared bottle of wine at lunch with the locals.
  • Humbling moments-like taking a punch you didn't see coming in a school boxing match.
  • Thrilling encounters-like facing off with an ice-skating gang on your very first day at the pond.
  • Unforgettable nights-like jamming with local musicians in the glow of youthful freedom.
  • Worrisome holidays-like praying for Dad's safe return from a top-secret mission before Thanksgiving.
  • Tender young love-like the scent of flowers during a walk in the garden with a girl who spoke no English, yet said everything with her eyes.

Whether you're a military brat, veteran, history lover, or simply someone who remembers the awkward beauty of coming of age in a changing world, A Look Back in Time, Vol. II 2nd Ed., will capture your imagination and stir your soul.

Travel back in time. Feel every moment. And maybe, rediscover a piece of your own story along the way.

(1) Military Writers Society of America Review, April 2020

A Look Back in Time is a profoundly personal glimpse into the life of Bernard N. Lee, Jr. The memoir relates events as a military brat in the 1950s, specifically on the family's first overseas tour in Ansbach, Germany. Lee's memoir is a treasure for generations of his family and an entertaining read for those with similar experiences.

(2) BookLife Prize Review, January 2020

The second volume in a series of memoirs, Bernard N. Lee, Jr.'s A Look Back in Time: Volume II digs into rich material...Lee writes with forceful clarity. His prose is assertive, detailed, convincing, and never ambiguous. He is empathetic and attentive to the emotional states of everyone he writes about, including himself.

(3) Writer's Digest Self Published Book Awards Review, November 2018

Anyone wanting to understand the 20th century Army brat life abroad is recommended to read A Look Back in Time, a memoir which admirably conveys a large slice of an American boy's life in Germany. I was drawn in by the narrator's awed voice as he tells the story of his magical experience flying on a plane with his family to Germany. The near crash rendered that experience a nightmare averted just like the one following...
