Blue Blazer Blues: Journals of a Gallery Guard (2016-2018)

Jeremy Mark Ritch

These journal entries were created over a two-year period when I was a gallery guard at an art museum. It is a collection of poetry, thoughts, and drawings, that I did while standing in various posts for eight hours at a time waiting for the clock to hit 5pm and send me home. My tenure at the museum was short but it was very memorable, even when mind-numbingly awful. I remember many days, my feet were in agonizing pain, my eyes straining to stay open, and my mind feeling that it was slowing fading into the void. It was in those times that these scribbles and doodles, literally saved me. The job itself was fairly easy, just stand, observe, and occasionally tell someone to stand back because they were too close. Much of the day was spent sneaking looks at my phone, illegally chatting up my fellow guards, and of course documenting my messy minds inner monologue.
