(Environmental Science and Engg) from Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay, and Doctor of Environmental Engg from Asian Institute of Technology, Bangkok, Thailand. He joined the Centre for Environmental Science and Engineering at IIT Bombay as a faculty member in 1984. He left IIT Bombay in 1995 to set up Environmental Management Centre LLP. In 2012, he established Ekonnect Knowledge Foundation - a Section-8 not-for-profit company. He served as Dean, IL&FS Academy for Applied Development (IAAD) and functioned as Chief Sustainability Officer at IL&FS Ltd. He is currently, Adjunct Professor at the Centre for Technology Alternatives in Rural Areas at IIT, Bombay Dr Modak has worked with almost all key UN, multi-lateral and bi-lateral developmental institutions in the world. Apart from Government of India and various State Governments, Dr Modak has advised the Governments of Bangladesh, Egypt, Indonesia, Mauritius, Thailand and Vietnam. Recently he was inducted on the India Resources Panel (for secondary material flows) by the Ministry of Environment & Forests and Climate Change, Government of India. Dr Modak has published books with the UN University on EIA (translations in Chinese, Japanese), Tokyo; Oxford University Press; UNEP, Paris on Textile Industry and Environment and Centre for Environmental Education in India on Waste Minimization. He served as Hon. Editor of the Journal of Indian Water Works from 1998 to 2004. He coordinated the chapter on Waste Management and Recycling in UNEP's Green Economy Report; contributed a chapter on Waste and Resource Management in UNEP/ISWA's Global Waste Management Outlook and assisted UNCRD to establish IPLA - International Partnership for Expanding Waste Management Services of Local Authorities. Currently he is working as Principal Author of the Asia Waste Management Outlook for UNEP IETC. Dr Modak has been a recipient of the Distinguished Alumni Award of AITAA in 2010 for Significant Contribution to International Affairs. He was elected to the Board Certified Member at the American Association of Environmental Engineers in recognition of his work in research & practice. He is now the Founder President of Indian Society for Indoor Environment. Music, Education, Travel and Environmental Movements are some of his passions in life.
