Blue Pink

Oliver Lovell

Set in Aotearoa New Zealand, Blue Pink introduces the reader to a cast of original, endearing, and irreverent characters which aim to challenge and entertain, as well as to shed light on little-known corners of New Zealand history, mythology, folklore, and working class lives and attitudes.

Follow Sam (a Pakeha) and George (a Maori), two contemporary misfits who are driven together to conjointly replant a sacred Maori Puriri tree on Puketutu island which was cut down by a European Settler two centuries ago and led to New Zealand's worst ever maritime disaster - according to local Maori lore.

Sam, disillusioned, and George, homeless, are aided by a drowned boy from the ship wreck the HMS Orpheus which became marooned the day after the tree was hacked down, as well as other ancestors they never knew existed. Such as a retired colonial soldier, a Maori chief's shaman, and fairy folk of a nearby forest.

True history is blurred with fictional characters and events, as well as supernatural beings and elements of speculative fiction, drawing on Maori myth, as well as Celtic.
