Berlin 1939 - 1943 From the smoking ruins of a bombed Berlin brothel, three shocked and injured female survivors are taken to a secluded training facility by Nazi officer, Gruppenführer Walter Schellenberg. They're not there for official business but for medical treatment. Trained by the SS officer in all aspects of espionage, the women are desperate to survive. They turn the tables on their armed captors and kill them. After covering their tracks, the women return to ply the only trade they know... with an added twist. Somehow these 'sisters in arms' escape the attention of the Nazis, despite the high rank of their victims, and their lucrative business thrives. They haven't escaped everyone's notice though. Blue Ring Assassins by Stephen Cohen offers a unique and gripping perspective on WWII, focusing on the women forced into espionage by the Nazis. The novel delves into the use of brothel prostitutes as spies, with the Nazis training them to seduce foreign men and extract secrets, using threats of concentration camps against brothel owners.

The story follows Hannah and her two friends, who endure Nazi training and find themselves caught in a struggle for survival as war ravages Berlin. Cohen's well-researched portrayal of these women's transformation from victims to empowered agents of vengeance is both compelling and heart-wrenching.

This is a powerful and original addition to WWII historical fiction, highlighting the often overlooked role of women during the war.

I would consider myself more than the average WWII history buff. Growing up with my father, a serious history lover, we were constantly getting quizzed on important dates and events. We watched more of the History Channel than we ever did sports, and my reading always seems to gravitate toward historical fiction after too much time away from it. So, I was excited to get back to the familiar with Stephen Cohen's "Blue Ring Assassins," the first book in the series.

From the opening pages of this read I found myself learning so much about WWII tactics. First, using brothel prostitutes as spies. But also with from the small marine animal with untraceable venom to kill, the very deadly weapon found in the book's titling.

"Blue Ring Assassins" is a powerful read around the prostitutes Nazis used. Threatening concentration camps to brothel owners unless they used prostitutes to seduce foreigner secrets, plying with alcohol women got the men talking, catching anyone being disloyal or carrying secrets. The Nazis trained these women and installed listening devices across the establishments.
