Buried Treasure: Unearthing the Riches of the Gospel of Mark

Hunter R. Hill

Buried Treasure addresses the easily missed or misperceived themes of Mark's Gospel, unearthing some surprising discoveries--buried treasures waiting to be found. The book examines nine Markan themes that emerge from the characters, events, and structure of Mark's story. In each chapter, readers follow a single theme, discovering narrative treasures along the way. Hunter R. Hill tells present-day stories of transformation and change, drawn from myriad sources, including his own life, and connects them to Mark's narrative of transformation, resurrection, and change. He links today's human realities and hopes to those discovered in Mark's artful account of the life of Jesus and those who imperfectly followed him. Hill also draws on the insight of his own master teachers and mentors, whose observations reveal and crystallize the good news unearthed over the years. Even for those who have spent a lifetime reading the Bible, much remains to be discovered in Mark's story, with Hunter R. Hill as a gracious, thoughtful guide. By reading Buried Treasure, readers unearth the riches of Mark's Gospel.

Praise for this book

"Hill has discovered new spiritual riches from the familiar Gospel of Mark. He makes Mark's text accessible and provides very valuable insights for today. 'Markan surprises' throughout show how the Gospel's story is astonishingly relevant and meaningful for us. Mark believed the story of Jesus matters in an ultimate way. Experiencing the risen Christ as present and active energizes all life. Hill helps us joyfully discover the transformative power of Mark's story of Jesus!"
--Donald K. McKim, author of Everyday Prayer with John Calvin

"What do you get when you combine pastoral wisdom attuned to the breadth and depth of human experience, a lifelong fascination with Mark's Gospel, keen literary sensibility, and lucid prose? The result is Buried Treasure. This wonderful book invites first-time readers of Mark into that intriguing story and offers fresh insight to seasoned readers as well."
--John T. Carroll, Harriet Robertson Fitts Memorial Professor of New Testament, Union Presbyterian Seminary

"Buried Treasure is the outcome of biblical inquiry informed by a disciplined theological imagination and creative methodology. Hill exposes fundamental themes imperceptibly woven into Mark's Gospel. These lead to insights regarding Jesus himself, the challenges of discipleship, the nature of the kingdom, the critical role of the female followers, the meaning of resurrection, and the ongoing situation of Mark's readers: fear joined with hope. The book is a treasure."
--Rebecca Harden Weaver, Professor of Church History emerita, Union Presbyterian Seminary
