Disconnected

Andrew Leigh

A forensic examination of Australian life, this insightful book suggests that contemporary society has lost touch with its communities and its people. Written from an economist's perspective and based on organizational membership records and surveys, it presents the reasons why the social fabric has begun to fray and outlines the necessary steps to create a better civic and personal life. Distilling various aspects of Australian routine--including religion, sport, and employment--this book reveals what is being lost and how to get it back.

Praise for this book

"This accessible and sophisticated book is really important, and not just for Australians. Andrew Leigh, who writes with wit and vigor, has produced the first comprehensive summary of trends in social connections anywhere outside the US. Anyone concerned about contemporary society will find this book both informative and enjoyable." --Robert Putnam, author, Bowling Alone
"Andrew Leigh is a rarity--an economist who can crunch numbers and write lucid, engaging prose on a subject that matters." --Adele Horin, columnist and reporter, Sydney Morning Herald
