Dynamic Resource Allocation in Embedded, High-Performance and Cloud Computing

Leandro Soares Indrusiak

The availability of many-core computing platforms enables a wide variety of technical solutions for systems across the embedded, high-performance and cloud computing domains. However, large scale manycore systems are notoriously hard to optimise. Choices regarding resource allocation alone can account for wide variability in timeliness and energy dissipation (up to several orders of magnitude). Dynamic Resource Allocation in Embedded, High-Performance and Cloud Computing covers dynamic resource allocation heuristics for manycore systems, aiming to provide appropriate guarantees on performance and energy efficiency. It addresses different types of systems, aiming to

harmonise the approaches to dynamic allocation across the complete spectrum between systems with little flexibility and strict real-time guarantees all the way to highly dynamic systems with soft performance requirements. Technical topics presented in the book include:

  • Load and Resource Models
  • Admission Control
  • Feedback-based Allocation and Optimisation
  • Search-based Allocation Heuristics
  • Distributed Allocation based on Swarm Intelligence
  • Value-Based Allocation

Each of the topics is illustrated with examples based on realistic computational platforms such as Network-on-Chip manycore processors, grids and private cloud environments.

About the Author

Singh, Amit Kumar: - Amit Kumar Singh received the B.Tech. degree in Electronics Engineering from Indian Institute of Technology (Indian School of Mines), Dhanbad, India, in 2006. Thereafter, he worked with HCL Technologies, India before starting his Ph.D. at School of Computer Engineering, Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Singapore. He completed his Ph.D. in 2012. He worked as a post-doctoral researcher at National University of Singapore (NUS) from 2012 to 2014 and at University of York, UK from 2014 to 2016. Currently, he is working as senior research fellow at University of Southampton, UK. His research interests include system level design-time and run-time optimizations of 2D and 3D multi-core systems with focus on performance, energy, temperature, and reliability. He has published over 45 papers in these areas in leading international journals/conferences. He was the recepient of ISORC 2016 Best Paper Award, PDP 2015 Best Paper Award, HiPEAC Paper Award, and GLSVLSI 2014 Best Paper Candidate. He has served on the TPC of IEEE/ACM conferences like ISED, MES, NoCArc and ESTIMedia.
Indrusiak, Leandro Soares: - Leandro Soares Indrusiak is a faculty member in the Department of Com- puter Science at the University of York. He is part of the Real-Time Systems group, with technical contributions in the areas of systems and networks with timing and energy constraints. He has more than 100 peer-reviewed publications in the top conferences and journals in real-time and embedded systems, design automation and high-performance computing. Over the past decade, he has supervised and graduated seven doctoral students, has held visiting faculty positions in five different countries, and has led projects funded by the European Union, research councils of the UK, Germany and Brazil, as well as several companies. Dr Indrusiak holds a bi-national doctoral degree jointly issued by UFRGS (Brazil) and TU Darmstadt (Germany) in 2003, is a member of the European Network of Excellence on High Performance and Embedded Architecture and Compilation (HiPEAC), and a senior member of the IEEE.
Dziurzanski, Piotr: - Piotr Dziurzanski received the M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in computer science from West Pomeranian University of Technology (Poland) in 2000 and 2003, respectively. From 2003 to 2012 he worked as an assistant professor at the same university. In 2013 he joined the DreamCloud project as a research associate at the University of York. He currently works as a lecturer at the Staffordshire University (UK) in the Faculty of Computing, Engineering and Sciences. His scientific interests include embedded systems, hardware-software co-design, on-chip multiprocessor systems and distributed computing.
