East Coast Blues - A 1960s Odyssey

John Eves

A fictional social history, which gets under the skin of 1960s England: its music and youth cultures and the more general social attitudes and behaviours of that decade.
John Eves challenges the depiction of Mods vs Rockers in the 60s, comparing experiences of living in North London at that time, to those of young people growing up in the provinces. This is interspersed with stories of working life in a small provincial office environment, with shocking accounts of the sexism and sexual harassment 'tolerated' by the female staff.

East Coast Blues - A 1960s Odyssey is the story of a young man coming of age in the 1960s; about how the Mod culture of the 1960s went sour through the mindless violence of a few. The novel reveals the jealousies, power struggles and disputes - mainly over girls - and challenges the bias of the press at the time, that all Mods were violent thugs.

This is not an alternative history but the 1960s as one man remembers living it.

"Can be loosely compared to Absolute Beginners by Colin Macinnes with regard to its social commentary"

Praise for this book

A totally authentic visit to the days of the early 1960s. A fast-paced journey through the coming of age of a young man and his associates as they live the life of those days. A great read for those who remember the times, but also this novel will inform and educate those who have only heard about that era; yes, that's exactly how it was! Brilliant book. MIDLANDSCAS

Has every ingredient of a really good novel. I thoroughly enjoyed it; plausible storyline borne from what must be real life experience and good research; an undercurrent of tension runs through most of the novel; and a narrative that makes you think. PETER MORRIS
