Falling is Not Failing: It is Not Over Until You Win

Wale Oyeniyi

You Can Get Back Up and Still WinHave you observed a child learning to walk?It usually goes something like this...The child would stand with the help of a nearby table or chair, as mummy and daddy cheer him on. He then takes his first step, the second, and then manages to take the third step. Then, bang! He lands on his butts on the ground! But he doesn't remain on the ground. He gets back up, he goes again. He tries the first step, then the second, and then third. Bang! He falls again.But...he gets up again. Tries again. He falls again. He gets up and tries again. Until he is able to walk without falling, and eventually, run! Why? Why does the child keep getting back up every time he falls? He could have remained on the ground after the first fall, or the second. He could have been frustrated and given up after he fell the third time. But he didn't.Why, you may ask? It's simple. The child understands that falling is NOT failing. Yes, believe me, FALLING IS NOT FAILING.Oh! How much better our lives would be if only we could understand and accept this message that, indeed, falling is NOT failing. The only person that won't ever fall, and does not need to fear falling, is he that's already on the ground. In our illustration above, the child could have concluded after falling the first or second time, "I won't bother trying to walk again. Besides, I will only end up falling."The child could have remained seated on the ground after he tried to walk and fell. And although that would eliminate the risk and pain of falling, it would also deny the child the joys of walking unaided and eventually running with his peers! What a loss that would be!The same is true of us. We try to walk, and fall, inevitably. We muster courage and strength to try again, only to sadly fall again."Maybe this will never work for me. Maybe it's not meant to be", we conclude. "I quit, I'm not even trying again." You tell yourself, as you decide to remain seated on the ground. After all, there's no point trying to walk, you're only going to fall again, right? No. Think again.I have good news for you. I have come to tell you that FALLING IS NOT FAILING. Yes, you may have fallen, but believe me, you haven't failed. Falling is not failing. The truth is this: you don't fail when you fall, no. You only fail when you fall and refuse to get back up and try again. In boxing, if a boxer knocks down his opponent, he is not immediately declared the winner of the match. No. He can only be declared the winner if the boxer who was knocked down is unable to get back up. Only then does the referee end the match and declare him the winner. But as long as the boxer who was knocked down is able to get back up within the time the referee allows, the fight continues.Life will knock you down, no doubt. But the question is, will you be like the boxer who was knocked down and stayed down, or like the boxer who was knocked down but refused to stay down.Again, falling is NOT failing. But then, you may be wondering, how? How do I get back up?Where do I find the strength, the courage to get back up and keep fighting till I win? That's why I wrote this book. Not just to tell you that you can, and must, get back up when life knocks you down, but more importantly, how to get back up and keep fighting to win.
