The story is set in the mountains of West Virginia where the victim was born and lived. Of the dozens of people who might have committed the crime of murder, only one paid the price. He was a young black who served as handyman in the urban estate where Mamie Thurman lived with her husband, the policeman on the downtown beat of Logan, West Virginia.
It is not likely that Clarence Stephenson was the guilty party, even if he were involved in a most unlikely way in the disposition of the body of Mamie Thurman.
