After leaving Millsville Ohio, Hannah Beiber, a 17-year-old girl Amish girl and her family move in with her aunt and uncle in upstate New York to await the purchase of their own farm. Like any other young person moving to a new area, Hannah wants to make friends, but encounters a culture, situations, and relationships one could not have imagined existing in an old-order Amish community. Then two young men are found dead, under suspicious circumstances, one being the son of the district bishop. Not knowing whether the murderer is an Englisher, or one of their own, sends shock waves traveling through the families of this otherwise docile society. Through her experiences in this new home, Hannah's faith in God is challenged, her values disputed, and she begins questioning the beliefs and practices ingrained in her since birth. The story provides the reader with an inside view of the behaviors, traditions and faith practices of the Swartzentruber old order Amish, the most conservative of the Amish sects.
