En 1939, el barco S.S. Saint Louis, con novecientos judíos que lograron huir de Alemania, estuvo fondeado varios días frente al puerto de La Habana a la espera del permiso para los refugiados. El niño Daniel Kaminsky y su tío esperaron en el muelle a que desembarcaran sus familiares, confiados en que usaran ante los funcionarios el tesoro que portaban a escondidas: un pequeño lienzo de Rembrandt que perteneció a los Kaminsky desde el siglo XVII. Pero el plan fracasó y el barco regresó a Alemania, llevándose con él toda esperanza de reencuentro.

Muchos años después, en 2007, la noticia de que ese lienzo se subasta en Londres, provoca que el hijo de Daniel, Elías, decida viajar a La Habana desde Estados Unidos para aclarar qué sucedió realmente con el cuadro y su familia. Sólo alguien como el Conde puede ayudarle en la misión. Y en los encuentros y las conversaciones sabremos que Daniel decidió cambiar radicalmente de vida y que le atormentaba un crimen. También que ese cuadro, una imagen de Cristo, tuvo como modelo a otro judío, que en la Ámsterdam del siglo XVII rompió todas las convenciones de clase y de religión para trabajar en el taller de Rembrandt y aprender a pintar con el maestro.

An impressive fusion of the detective and historical genres in Leonardo Padura's new novel.

In 1939, the ship S.S. Saint Louis, with nine hundred Jews who managed to flee Germany, was anchored for several days off the port of Havana waiting for permission for refugees. The boy Daniel Kaminsky and his uncle waited on the dock for their relatives to disembark, confident that they would use the treasure they were secretly carrying to the officials: a small canvas by Rembrandt that belonged to the Kaminskys since the seventeenth century. But the plan failed and the ship returned to Germany, taking with it all hope of reunion.

Many years later, in 2007, the news that this canvas was being auctioned in London, caused Daniel's son, Elías, to decide to travel to Havana from the United States to clarify what really happened to the painting and his family. Only someone like the Count can help him in the mission. And in the meetings and conversations we will learn that Daniel decided to radically change his life and that he was tormented by a crime. Also that this painting, an image of Christ, had as a model another Jew, who in seventeenth-century Amsterdam broke all the conventions of class and religion to work in Rembrandt's workshop and learn to paint with the master.
