Irises For Alan: Love and Faith, Lost and Found

Robert Pagano

All Alan wanted at nine years old was to become a priest. His mother, a devout Catholic, played a role in that aspiration by introducing him to the alluring mysteries of the Church. Neither of them anticipated the tragedy that would turn his world upside down a few years later, and make him question the foundation of his religious upbringing. Soon afterwards he was no longer able to take on faith alone that a divine, imperceptible being existed.

Despondent, though still curious, Alan picks up an astronomy book and learns that scientists can solve difficult problems and explain the invisible forces that control the universe. He challenges himself to either prove God exists with science or become an atheist, like his father. In his quest, Alan gets help from a motley trio: Emily, a girl he once abandoned, John, a boy genius who moves in down the block, and Tim, Alan's best friend. Together the trio navigate some turbulent situations while coming of age and trying to help Alan find answers. Uncovering unexpected, encouraging connections between various scientific frameworks, Alan is inspired and feels that he might be on the verge of a great discovery. In a twist of circumstance, Alan and his friends find themselves stalked by a sociopathic killer, whose plan for them seems inescapable.

As the story plunges into a suspenseful thriller, it is uncertain whether Alan and his friends will survive, let alone solve the ancient riddle that is foremost in Alan's mind.

"Wit, pathos, and the quest for answers to the age old question of our existence against a coming of age backdrop of everyday life with its triumphs, tragedies and challenges made this novel, for me, so enjoyable. A great read and I highly recommended it."
