Marin County Bad Art Gallery: Celebrating Creative Failure

Jeff Olson

This is a collection of "bad art" - color photos of paintings and drawings and their accompanying wall texts. Over the past 3 years, the authors have prowled thrift stores, flea markets, sidewalk rejects and garage sales looking for treasured freaks, irregulars, defects, and oddities. Each of these castoff gems have been honored with accession numbers, imaginative titles and fictitious artists, as well as interpretive descriptions, stories or critiques. This visual offering may be seen as a creative "pep talk" as it attempts to put the learning process in perspective while encouraging all art lovers to see the humor that is inherent in many failed creative attempts. This book is not meant for the easily offended person who takes herself too seriously, but rather someone who appreciates an irreverently good-natured poke at a few stereotypes and art aficionados - and those who just like to laugh at absurd sillines

About the Author

This is the section where the authors list their accomplishments, degrees and awards to dazzle the book buying public and convince them that they march at the head of their chosen field. Well, we looked for our bona fides and found them stuffed under the bed covered with dust. In an attempt to clean them up a bit, they were washed on a hot water cycle and shrank two sizes so they don't really fit anymore. The authors hope that you believe them when they say that they really love art and do creative things every chance they get and frequently go to art galleries and museums. Their history together as creative types goes way back according to their past lives psychic who says they have known each other since 800 A.D. when one of them was an Irish peasant woman making mince pies and the other one was an invading Viking spreading culture, war and DNA. Liking the looks of him and his long boat, she didn't protest when he swept her and her pies up and sailed back to his homeland. They've been together, off and on for centuries ever since. She still makes mince pies and he raids just the kitchen now with armfuls of bad art, not battle-axes.
