Matter normally exists in one of the three classic forms: solid, liquid or gas. There are states which, although not the most stable forms of matter, are nonetheless ones that formulators and chemists are likely to encounter frequently. Because they have particular properties, it's important to know and recognize them well.These states do not constitute new phases, but rather a particular mode of phase coexistence. These are called dispersed systems. A dispersed system is made up of at least two phases, one of which is the dispersing phase. The other phase is the dispersed phase, and is discontinuous. There may be several dispersed phases.
