Raising a Tornjak Dog: The Definitive Resource for All Things Related to Tornjak Dogs and Their Care

Jace Cooper

Originally from the Balkans, and more specifically the countries of Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Tornjak are a kind of livestock guardian dog. The breed's traditional duty was to keep watch over cattle and property, which is where the name "Tornjak" came from: the Serbo-Croatian terms "tor" (enclosure) and "njak" (guard).
Large and powerful, Tornjaks have a thick double coat that protects them from the cold and snow. Their primary function is to keep predators like wolves and bears away from sheep and goats. The strong protective instincts, loyalty, and bravery of these canines are legendary. They are calm and loving among their human family yet fiercely protective of their charges.
The Tornjak has long been celebrated as a unique breed in its home region, and its fame is now spreading beyond its borders. Farmers and shepherds in areas where livestock is at risk will find these dogs to be invaluable working companions. When raised in a loving home environment and given adequate socialization and training, they make excellent companion animals.
