Recollections About Race: Getting to the Roots and Healing

Janis Evans

Recollections About Race invites the reader to tell their stories to themselves and to others and no longer remain in a state of suffering silence. In a time such as this, as our country is engaging in the reckoning of racial injustices and police brutality, African Americans have evocative stories to tell that are surfacing daily to the American consciousness and need to be heard. The current book world on this subject is full of theory-based, scholarly, well-researched content. For the reader who is embarking on self-discovery and introspection about painful racial experiences triggered by current events, Recollections About Race will provide validation and acknowledgement that their stories matter regardless of how seemingly insignificant.

Praise for this book

"Janis shares a courageous, personal exploration of her early and ongoing recollections of overtly racist incidents as well as more subtle micro-aggressions. Many of us will be transported back to memories from our own academic, social and professional lives. That's the easy part. What we typically don't do is examine the psychological damage that has occurred from a lifetime of being Black in America. The triumph of her book is that in telling her story, she provides gentle guidance to help others begin to examine that damage and offer strategies to start the work of undoing, healing the harm."

"Recollections About Race presents a beautifully written personal account of a range of racially motivated experiences in a style that's highly relatable and familiar to many Black people in America. Janis Evans provides expert work that highlights the value of telling our stories and validating our experiences and impact. Her work uplifts our ability to empower ourselves to heal and function well, even in the face of the racial hostilities Black in America frequently encounter.

"I read and re-read this book! Janis Leslie Evans' recollections caused me to remember my own, and her storytelling journal caused me to put pen to paper. She is indeed the "Healing Author" and owns her title. Her recollections touch us deeply and ring so true. These recollections remind us of our own pain, of our own trauma. But Janis doesn't stop with the recollections. She provides a much-needed path forward for healing and wholeness."
