Su primer libro, Under a Flaming Sky, The Great Hinckley Firestorm of 1894 (2006), traza las historias personales y las causas sociales, económicas y ambientales de la de la tragedia en la que se quemó una superficie de hasta 250.000 acres (1.000 kilómetros cuadrados), incluyendo la ciudad de Hinckley, Minnesota.
