@nikkidolson A great first line poses a question in the reader's mind and provides immediate entry into a conflict. Personally, I prefer to do this with a simple declarative sentence, which I think I picked up from reading a lot of literary short stories. @TommyDeanWriter Now I'm trying to think about questions in short fiction generally. Somehow, Richard Ford gets away with all those questions at the end of "Rock Springs," culminating in "Would you think he was anybody like you?" But I can't think of a lot of other successes.
