The day I became black: My journey to America

Abdirahman M. Siad

This book is the journey of a Somali immigrant who arrived in America without knowing his skin color and how that impacted his life. Many immigrants came to this country, but lucky for them, they did not have to worry about their skin color. This was a privilege that was not afforded to me and millions of immigrants from Africa simply because we are black.
I had to navigate racial discrimination against people of color in this country, something about which I did not have to worry in my native country, Somalia, where no one will ever ask you your race or skin color. The only distinction among us was our clan association.

Despite all the challenges I faced in country, I am grateful to my adapted country, which has given me so much. I came to this country with nothing and have accomplished a lot, including my four children, who are successful. America has always been a beacon of hope for millions of people who crossed oceans and took immeasurable risks to build lives for themselves and their children. America has always been a melting pot with many ethnicities and cultures, making it a world leader. Unfortunately, there are those trying to close the doors for new immigrants, denying the same opportunity their forefathers were given when they arrived on the shores of this great country. Let us keep our country a great beacon of hope for all for years to come.
GOD BLESS AMERICA.
