The Hook Was Very Sharp

Ginger Legato

Where does one find solace after the death of a father? Who will listen without judgment to grief's flood of fragile memories, insights, regrets?

The young narrator of this collection addresses a meandering creek where she and her father spent quiet hours together fishing. "Creek" becomes the confidante who receives her questions and qualms.

The Hook Was Very Sharp, examines a shy daughter's relationship with the hard-working, self-sacrificing, gambling, father at the center of her Italian American family. This collection, a family portrait drawn in words, is at once elegy, lament, and praise.

This book is illustrated by the author with seven abstract paintings influenced by the Habuku ink-splash style of Japanese painting.

Praise for this book

"Ginger Legato's tribute to her father is fresh, clear admiration, bringing his generation of men back from the New York racetrack and bar and into poetry. When Legato performed the entire work in Abiquiu, New Mexico-I'll never forget it.... I loved being with her Italian father for a while and am glad the energy of his daughter persisted in bringing the performance onto the page."

-Joan Logghe, Santa Fe Poet Laureate, 2010-12

"In poems so lean and carefully placed, Legato creates a work of art, a breathing mosaic, a river of memory. Poem by poem, a father-daughter history is wrestled with, revealed and memorialized. The Hook Was Very Sharp balances celebration, tenderness, conflict, and acceptance. There is no collection that compares to these charged, elegant poems."

-Barbara Rockman, author of to cleave and Sting and Nest

"This brilliant book is a lifework-

a brave and tender reckoning with childhood, family, and the legacy of love."

-Morgan Farley, author of
