Named in honor of President Lincoln, the eagle became the mascot of the Eighth Regiment of the Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry. Old Abe was beloved by foot soldiers and officers alike. Caple, Laurie: -

A childhood spent exploring the beauty and treasures of the natural world helped set the stage for Laurie Caple's career as a nature artist and children's book illustrator.
