Wishes aren't all they're cracked up to be... especially when you have to capture the Fairies who grant them to you.
Er... make that faeries... and not the normal, hiding-in-plain-sight magical kind.
When a misadventure cleaning out the attic leads Isaac to release a faerie trapped in a glass ball of light, he believes he's struck gold--in the form of wishes. All he has to do is mention the name that was engraved on the ball, and the indebted faerie would grant him any three wishes he wanted.
The best part of all was knowing that there was an entire chest of captured faeries waiting to be freed...
But when strange things start to happen around town, Isaac begins to wonder if the increasingly unfortunate events are his doing.
Only his mysterious neighbor, Yara, knows the truth about his lineage as a Light Keeper.
Can Yara's strength and wisdom guide Isaac into his new role?
Can Isaac make things right again?
Or will his dream-come-true turn into his worst nightmare?
Guys! This book has everything you want! Fairies (goblins, pixies, trolls), family secrets, new friends, unexpected friends, magic, pranks, and a villain trying to take over the world!
I have to admit, I related to Yara more than Isaac because I found him to be irresponsible and narcissistic at first. But that's what made the book so fun ... he really had NO IDEA what he was doing by letting the fairies fulfill his every wish (clean my room, get a milkshake, erase memories). I personally would NOT have used the fairies for things like getting a milkshake but I probably read and watched enough to know EVERYTHING comes at a price and magic use is not so simple.
The rice counting made me laugh out loud because I could picture the neurotic fairy trying to count every grain of rice and Yara just throwing it around 🤣! I'm excited to see what happens in book 2!!

This was a great summer read! I finished it super quick -- actually, I wished it was a bit longer so I could have gotten to know some of the characters more, learned about Yara's amazing bunker and her history and the history of the Light Keepers! Bring on book 2!!
The author, Christina Wallace, crafts a delightful fantasy that is entertaining and fun. Each character is carefully developed and consistent throughout the story. The plot twists are well done and unique.
Wallace's middle-grade urban fantasy novel was a lot of fun to read! Young readers will enjoy following Issac as he learns the good and bad about faeries. I loved how many lessons the author built into the story without them feeling cumbersome to the reader. Issac gets to learn from his mistakes and take responsibility for his actions. At the same time, he also learned about friendship and not judging others by how they look or behave.
