The Machinery of School Internationalisation in Action: Beyond the Established Boundaries

Laura C. Engel

Drawing on scholarship from the field of internationalisation in higher education and other theoretical influences in education policy, comparative education and sociology of education, this edited collection offers a much-needed extension of discussion and research into the compulsory schooling context.

In this book, established and emerging scholars provide an authoritative set of conceptual tools for researchers in the field of internationalisation of compulsory schooling. It provides an overview of the current knowledge base and ways in which future research could engage with gaps in understandings. Through detailed case studies of the multiple forms of internationalisation present within schools and schooling systems, the volume considers why and how processes of internationalisation are shaping compulsory schooling today.

This book will offer scholars and educators a clearer, more coherent set of conceptual frameworks within which to position their work in sociology of education, and international and comparative education, helping to develop a more comprehensive understanding of the many ways compulsory schooling is being internationalised, and with what consequences.

Praise for this book

"Given the growing significance of internationalisation of education in both local public schools and private international schools across East and West and the Global South and North, this edited volume critically engages with core theoretical and empirical issues concerned with internationalising schools. The volume is empirically well grounded and theoretically incisive. It is a product carefully orchestrated by stellar researchers in the field." - Professor Moosung Lee, Centenary Professor, University of Canberra, Australia

"This book is an important and very worthwhile addition to the recent literature on school internationalisation. Written by authors from a range of educational backgrounds and contexts, each chapter brings insightful theoretical and practical knowledge to bear on the key issues and possibilities facing the internationalisation of schools today. Whether readers are interested in global policy directions, theoretical approaches, or practical examples, this book has something to offer. The analysis contained within does not shy away from addressing core questions which remain about the international practices of schools, and the editors have executed the task of forging a cohesive and focused book with skill and acumen. I highly recommend it." - Andrew Peterson, Professor of Character and Citizenship Education, Jubilee Centre for Character and Virtues, University of Birmingham, UK

"The spotlight of this edited volume of essays is on internationalisation in education. Finally, we have an important landmark reference that reveals the multiple ways in which internationalisation is practiced in diverse educational contexts, and where a repertoire of theories is used astutely to critically analyse how internationalisation is put into action. This book is necessary, and intriguing work for all who study internationalisation in education." - Aaron Koh, associate professor, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, China.

"Various processes of new class formation are now evident around the world, with schools playing a major role in creating transnational elites. This collection of original papers brings together scholars, both established and emerging, to consider the contentious and contradictory nature of these processes. The papers show in particular how the discourses of internationalisation are deployed to socially differentiate categories of students and schools." - Fazal Rizvi, The University of Melbourne, Australia

"This wide-ranging, cross-disciplinary anthology of essays could not have come at a more needed time as the topic of globalization and internationalization in schooling comes under the pressure of a wider policy environment in key Western states that now tends toward feral nationalism and localism and boundary maintenance as underscored by Brexit-Trump. Contributors to this volume are to be commended for grappling with internationalization and globalization in education by interrogating commonly accepted starting points and connecting richly layered empirical studies with thoroughgoing theoretical insights and with a strong commitment to policy reflection and intervention. A particularly compelling feature of this collaborative scholarly effort is the depth and breadth of subject matter considered and the evident commitment of contributors to work across the often presumptive and calcifying divides lodged in North/South geographies. This volume should be required reading for those interested in the economic, cultural and political transformations associated with globalization that are now fully articulated to schooling in even the most remote zones of the globe. Beyond the established boundaries should be required reading for both scholars and practitioners interested in the impact of internationalization and globalization in schooling and the implications for change and transformation in the tumult of the contemporary era." - Cameron McCarthy, University Scholar, Former Director of Global Studies Education, University of Illinois, USA
