The Other One
In June 2001, Rachel Vanderweck's daughter, Annie, is kidnapped. Greta Calders, an African American detective, has just fled an oppressive family situation in Detroit. On her first day in the majority white, all-male detective squad, Greta is asked to interview distraught Rachel Vanderweck. Greta desperately wants the case, but she is passed over initially, only to be assigned to it following 9/11 when the unit is short-staffed. She struggles to solve this case. Was baby Annie kidnapped by Rachel's controlling husband, Dr. Paul Vanderweck? Was his smug, domineering mother involved? What's up with the psychologist treating Rachel weeks prior to the kidnapping, Dr. Sarah Hardenberg, who is growing increasingly unhinged following her husband's premature death from lung cancer? How much of the dysfunction surrounding Rachel is an echo of her own childhood abuse, and will she ever free herself from that cycle? After Rachel divorces Paul and decides to raise her second child, Lucy, alone, she and Greta form a close friendship. Fifteen years will pass before Greta and Rachel finally unravel the mystery of who took baby Annie, but will they be able to solve it before Lucy too is taken?
