Toward Better Days

Martha I. Clyburn

The world of illness and caregiving is a maze of emotions mixed with a lack of information and knowledge about needs and resources as well as great personal stress. As a social worker and counselor for many years, as well as a caregiver to several family members and friends the author has come to realize that no one is adequately prepared for the tasks at hand. Even though there are professionals involved with the care of an incapacitated person, there is still a need for a family member or friend to shoulder many of the day to day responsibilities. This may be as simple as keeping someone company, doing laundry, cleaning the house, or as complicated as handling medications, legal matters, coordinating resources, etc. "As I cared for various loved one I learned ways to make my life and that of the patient a little easier. I received much encouragement from family and friends to share my knowledge and experiences; thus, I have published "Toward Better Days", a book to help the informal caregiver with general information, suggested forms to track needed information and possible resources for assistance. The information is surrounded by photos, poems, and whimsy to brighten a day, bring a smile, bring back a happy memory, or give a brief escape from the reality of the situation."
