Tuesday's Mah Jongg Is More Than a Game

Marsha Temlock

". . . delightful and funny. . . By the time I finished the book I wanted to join the ladies at the table and learn to play the game myself." -Florence Reiss Kraut, author of How to Make a Life and Street Corner Dreams

"Evocative and insightful . . . A wonderful read!" -Sharon Sobel, author of Madame Cristobel's Secret, The Hermitage, and The Christmas Cameo

In the ancient Chinese game of mah jongg, each player must make the most of the tiles they've been given. It's the same in the game of life.

When Roseann is called away to a family emergency, her mah jongg pals bring in a new player, Grace. Roseann returns with her grandson, committed to raising a child again-this time as a widow with serious health issues. Marlene, a dutiful but repressed wife, is dealing with a dying mother and fractious father; Susan, a twice-divorced new grandmother, struggles with the realities of aging and fading beauty amid the modern dating scene; Barbara, a successful businesswoman, is married to a manipulative philanderer; and Grace, a social worker, becomes the voice of reason-until her loyalties are tested.

Will these friends, with ties both old and new, strengthen their bonds as they support each other through life's challenges? Or will the group fracture, leaving them scattered like mah jongg tiles from an overturned table?

Praise for this book

"Evocative and insightful, Marsha Temlock's new novel has the effect of bringing her readers to the table of Tuesday's mah jongg game. As we come to know Marlene, Susan, Grace, Barbara, Roseann, and Jennifer, we share the bonds that the game wrought in the players' hearts and minds. A wonderful read!" -Sharon Sobel, author of Madame Cristobel's Secret, The Hermitage, and The Christmas Cameo

"Marsha Temlock's delightful and funny novel, Tuesday's Mah Jongg is More Than a Game, about five women who gather weekly to play the ancient Chinese game of mah jongg and gossip, advise, and care for one another, is a treat to read. The women-Roseanne, Marlene, Susan, Barbara and Grace-all in their late prime, each struggle with life defining issues. Does Roseanne have the strength and energy to care for her grandson, deserted by his parents? Will Marlene continue to repress her own needs while she cares for a dying mother, a narcissistic father, and a husband who calls all the shots? Can the twice-divorced Susan navigate the online dating world at this stage in her life? Can Barbara save her business while dealing with an unfaithful and alcoholic husband? Can Grace, a social worker who cares for everyone, finally take care of herself? As a year passes, we follow each of the women through their crises and dilemmas and cheer for their successes, even as we worry about their missteps and meddling and imperfect solutions. What more can a group of friends wish for but love, support, advice, loyalty, and maybe a good hand each Tuesday at their mah jongg game? By the time I finished the book I wanted to join the ladies at the table and learn to play the game myself." -Florence Reiss Kraut, author of How to Make a Life and Street Corner Dreams

"Marsha Temlock's novel is a story of interlocking female friendships, anchored by their weekly and beloved mah jongg game. Each character has her own distinct flaws, quirks, tribulations, and strengths. The women bicker, meddle, try to solve each other's problems, and rally as one unit when one of the group suffers a catastrophic health event. Most of all, despite their frictions, they love and support one another. Temlock has a gift for making this game come to life on its own-and as a metaphor for the lives of her characters. And mah jongg is a character in its own right. She also has a keen eye for detail. Her descriptions of various surroundings and living spaces are vivid and clever. This novel makes for perfect, stress-free summer reading-perhaps before or after a spirited game of mah jongg. I may just have to learn how to play myself!" -Amy Losak, coauthor, Wing Strokes Haiku and coeditor, Poised Across the Sky
