Under the Open Sky: A Story of Magic, God, and Girlhood

Rachel Waterhouse

"There I was, the charity kid, sad and poor, only at a private academy because I was a preacher's daughter. We drove a deadbeat car. I wore hand-me-downs and combat boots. Suddenly, I am pregnant, a witch, and a liar. I have no friends, and I use hundreds of bracelets (called infinity "charms") to curse the whole school. Of course it looked like I stole the money." Abigail Moore is your typical preacher's daughter-active in the church, swift to volunteer, and curious: is God really there? As she stumbles through the West Texas landscape of magic, coyotes, aliens, and boys, Abigail finds herself in a huge scandal. And it's just what she needs to open her mind and seek the truth. In the style of Carson McCullers, author Rachel Waterhouse, plods through a strange and southern coming-of-age world, giving the reader an inside-look on growing up. The novel draws from her own story as a preacher's daughter living in Texas. Other than a religious background, Waterhouse credits the mystery of the natural world, "Because the only thing you could do in a small town was look up." Under the Open Sky is her first YA novel.

About the Author

Rachel Waterhouse (1988) was born and raised in the Texas Panhandle, "a short walk away from the middle of nowhere." The never-ending backdrop of sky, space, and two-dimensional plains inspired her to look inward and out. Her career as a writer began early, watching her father scratch away at his desk. As a preacher's daughter, Waterhouse notes her "unconventionally conservative" upbringing as a drawing board for stories. She pulls from the experiences of religion, small-town living, and the extremist, mega-church culture, which quelled a very unsure America. Mingling the spiritual with the southern, Waterhouse finds a recipe for magic. "The space between a desolate, empty place and God is not very far," she says about the creative energy of the southwest. The author holds a B.A. in English from Texas Woman's University and works as a professional ghostwriter. Though not credited for her work, Waterhouse takes the time to hone her skill through the real-life characters she meets worldwide. Practicing the art of natural healing, bodywork, and sound art comprises the rest of her time. She resides back in the Texas Panhandle with her partner, two daughters, and their burgeoning troupe of farm animals. Under the Open Sky is her first YA novel.
