What Paul Might Say Today: Critiques in the Practical Theology of 21st Century Western Christendom

Desmond Paul Allen

Knowledge abounds within the Western Evangelical Christian churches. Many parishioners actively study their Bibles, memorizing numerous applicable passages of interest. They listen intently to the pastor's sermon and many attend Sunday school to learn even more. This is all good. But over the centuries, certain practices within Western Christendom have arisen that are other than biblical. Some customs have become so commonplace and central to both our culture and our faith that few ever stop to question their purpose or validity. Here, vital issues such as socio-political activism, love and marriage, science and faith, prosperity theology, traditional church activities and more are critiqued and found wanting. These deficits are such that the overall appearance of 21st Century Western Christendom mirrors that of the Laodiceans; in which (if we understand the letters to the seven churches in the Revelation to be a prophetic view of the Church Age), we are hard pressed not to see ourselves in this seventh letter.
