WORKS AND DAYS

When Chayne Kandzierski returns to Geschichte Falls, Michigan from his his life in Chicago as a failed academic, the first thing he needs is a home and the second and more important is his godson, Russell Lewis. On the Sunday when Chayne returns, and the air of the town smells like chicken and biscuits, Russell's mother, Patti, realizes she has become little more than a doormat to her up and coming husband, Thom, who is in the midst of losing his own soul. Chayne, Russell and Patti set out to find their way, but they are not the only ones who have been feeling a little lost. Late night parties in the backyard will help, the creation of the Artistic Society will too. Sacred statues will be stolen and desecrated, and now and again will come the occasional hitchhiking. Sharon, Chayne's beautiful but neglected mother, Jackie, Russell's waiting in the wings aunt, and Gilead Story, Chayne's precocious high school cousin are just some of the people who stumble into adventure and misadventure in Geschichte Falls, Michigan during the late summer of 1998.
