Yogi Berra: Baseball Legend

Robert S. Young

Yogi Berra was one-of-a-kind. There's never been a baseball player like him, and there likely never will be!

Yogi was selected Most Valuable Player three times, an honor only three other players have achieved. He was chosen for the All-Star team 13 years in a row, played in fourteen World Series, and won ten. No other player has ever done that.

Kids should know about this modest, hard-working man, and now they can. My book, Yogi Berra: Baseball Legend is a picture book biography of one of baseball's greatest players. The book traces his life, from his childhood on The Hill in St. Louis to his entry into professional baseball and on to his highly successful career with the New York Yankees that led him to the Baseball Hall of Fame. Although Yogi passed away in 2015, he remains an icon because of his baseball accomplishments as well as his quotable sayings, his "way with words" that became ingrained in our culture.

Yogi's story is not just about a boy who overcame his humble beginnings to become a major league star. This is a story of a child, then a man, who was teased and taunted most of his life about the way he looked. Best of all, this is a story of how Yogi overcame the challenges of peoples' hurtful words. Young readers will relate to these challenges because of the many forms of bullying that continue to this day.

About the Author

Young, Robert S.: - After growing up on the east coast and attending universities in New Jersey, Missouri, and Nevada, I settled in southern Oregon, a perfect locale to pursue my interests in hiking, biking, swimming, and observing the world. I have worked as a classroom teacher and literacy specialist as well as a writing consultant, and I continue to write books for children. To date, I have had twenty-nine books published. Most have been with traditional publishers (Silver Burdette, Macmillan, Lerner), but I have also worked with small publishers (Bushbaby, Your Town Press, Koke Next Generation), and even produced titles myself (Real Writing Press). Questions are a constant companion. As a result, most of my books are nonfiction and based on my many curiosities. Titles include Passage: A Dog's Journey with Lewis and Clark, The Magic of A.C. Gilbert, Chomp! A Chewer's Guide to Gum, Friends of the Wolf, Lobo: The Hunted and the Hunter, and Yogi Berra: Baseball Legend. In addition to writing for kids, I also write screenplays as well as music lyrics which, in collaboration with talented musicians, get made into songs. The joys and challenges of working with words awaken me most every morning. Even holidays.
