What Book Clubs Are Reading in December

This month, Dua Lipa chose THE reigning beach read of the past summer, which tracks a crafty Hamptons impostor grifting her way through Long Island's moneyed East End. “Cline has created a character who is so intriguing... Natalie Portman invites her club members to delve into this novella by an acclaimed Booker Prize finalist, about a girl sent to live with relatives on a farm in rural Ireland. “There’s a warmth and complexity to Keegan’s characters that I hope you all connect with as much as I have!” remarked the Academy Award winner.

For her latest book club selection, Queen Camilla dusted off a beloved cult campus novel (and perennial obsession of Dark Academia fans) while teasing some of the plot to her readers: “As Richard Paper escapes his dreary childhood and enters an elite New England college, he forges connections with a group of misfits, each as clever and complex as himself. Amidst their deepening camaraderie and the loosening grip of conventional morality, a mesmerizing thriller unfolds.”

For December, Jenna Bush Hager picked this historical novel that vividly recounts the little-known story of the Warsaw Ghetto residents who documented the lives of their imprisoned neighbors during WWII. “It is a book about love and resilience, about hope even in the darkest moments. It’s timely and powerful, and it proves that even in the darkest corners, love still remains," declared the Today host.

“How about a captivating thriller for the holidays?” inquired the Hollywood superstar (and avid reader) when announcing her December selection. Set in a gorgeous Greek villa, it’s a psychological thriller that “reads like true crime and had me guessing until the very end.”

Roxane Gay selected the third title from her imprint as her December pick. It’s a dark, page-turning dissection of the dysfunctional friendship between two suburban women that the Washington Post called "the Gone Girl-style thriller you were waiting for."

This historical mystery inspired by the life and diary of Martha Ballard, a real 18th-century midwife investigating a murder in her small Maine town, is Good Morning America’s latest book club selection.

Actor Emma Roberts' December pick is a thought-provoking memoir by a woman who was enrolled as a toddler in an unprecedented UC Berkeley personality development study designed to predict who she would grow up to be. Decades later, the now investigative journalist reflects on “the dark side of experimentation on human subjects [and] also asks disturbing questions about the consequences modern data-gathering will have on future generations,” according to Kirkus.
