STACKED: What’s on Sarah Hoover's Shelf

Rich kids trapped somewhere together is one of my favorite genres. This is set at a boarding school, but it has a sort of sci-fi, mildly dystopic bend to it that ends up being totally heartbreaking and beautiful and teaches you so much about humanity. It’s just one of the most beautiful and profound books I’ve ever read.

If you like the movie The Substance, you’re going to like this way better. It’s brilliant and genius, and it’s about so many really topical things like women, beauty, the beauty industry… Allie Rowbottom is one of the most incredible writers working today, and she’s young, blonde, and fabulous.

This is one of my favorite voices I’ve ever read in a book. It’s just so "voicey" that it sucks you in, and you feel like you’re in the brains of all the characters. It’s a wild roller coaster ride… It’s just really propulsive and fun to read. So, if you like roller coasters, this is a really good one.

This also falls into the genre of rich kids trapped in a place. This is about college students, and it weaves in Greek mythology, partying, and being naughty. Donna Tartt is incredible, and it’s a really fun book to read. It goes places that you sure don’t expect, and that’s why we love The Secret History.

A gorgeous book, basically poetry about someone’s relationship with their mother… It makes you cry so many times, but also gives you so much hope and happiness.

My grandmother, who grew up in Brooklyn, gave me this when I was a little girl, and it’s one of the things that made me want to move to New York. It’s like an American classic, and it will make you so interested in the formation of the city. It starts at a time when New York and America were really coming into being and developing their own identity.

This is a bit of a triggering book to read because it depicts a lot of violence towards women, but it is so compelling... You get so sucked in, and it will make you equal parts amazed, enraged, horrified, hopeful, and happy. It’s just beautiful, beautiful writing by an incredible young, fabulous author.

This is an amazing cover because the way I feel when I look at this painting is the way I feel when I read this book... Ann Patchett is an incredible author... I’ve gone deep on Ann Patchett, OK? But this book is the crowning jewel of all her tales.

My favorite book of all time. It’s the most glamorous book you’ll ever read. I discovered this book for myself when I was going through a terrible breakup in my early 20s, and it soothed me… Make sure you read this before you watch the movie from the ‘60s, which is really fun too.
