I’m reading The Years by Annie Ernaux, and it’s breathtaking. Like reading jazz. This, after just finishing One Hundred Years of Solitude (finally), has totally rewired my brain for the new year.

It took my breath away. I’d often thought about the Hamnet/Hamlet connection, and how the grief from the death of Shakespeare’s son Hamnet was poured into the writing of Hamlet, but this book clean broke my heart, and made it soar. Maggie O’Farrell is an alchemist.

I'm reading 'Them' by Francine du Plessix-Gray, and it's the family history version of watching a slow-moving train wreck through a tidal wave during an earthquake. It almost makes my family seem normal.

I finished reading Lauren Groff’s ‘Matrix’ last night and was bereft. So I listened to Chilly Gonzalez all day and am now just normal-melancholy.
